How to Tackle Open-Ended Science Questions: The G.L.O.W Framework Explained

Built on the GLOW Framework and Backed by Results. Our Structured Tuition Helps Students Understand, Apply, and Excel in PSLE

How to Answer Open-Ended Science Questions

Many students struggle with open-ended science questions in the PSLE Science exam, and it’s not because they don’t know the content.

The real challenge lies in how to express that knowledge clearly, logically, and in a way that earns marks.

Your child may understand the concepts, but when it’s time to answer the question, they freeze. Does this sound familiar?

In this article, you’ll be introduced to the Glow Science 4D Framework™ — a proven approach developed by the team at Glow Science to solve one of the biggest challenges students face: answering science open-ended questions with clarity, structure, and confidence.

Why open-ended science questions are tough for many students

The correct science answering technique can help you to answer open ended questions in exams.

Open-ended questions make up a significant portion of the PSLE Science paper.

Yet, many students lose marks — not because they don’t know the answer, but because they don’t know how to explain it properly.

Some of the common issues include:

  • Giving vague answers without scientific keywords
  • Writing too much or too little
  • Misinterpret / Misconception : of the question being asked
  • Wrong / Confused concept application, Confusing or incorrect use of scientific concepts

For example, a question on energy conversion,

challenging psle science questions

(a) Which ball can create the deepest dent in the sand, explain your answer in terms of (energy). (2m)
Misconception: Ball C, as Ball C is heaviest.
Incomplete answers: Ball C, as it is the highest.

Correct answer: (Using G.L.O.W signature Technique)

(Give an answer) (Link with evidence) (Confirm Concept:)
Ball C, as it was dropped from the greatest height, so it possessed the greatest amount of gravitational potential energy and made a deeper hole.

Wrap with a conclusion.

So, how can the teachers at Glow Science help your child to answer PSLE questions with similar precision?

The Glow Science 4D Framework™: How your child can master science questions

challenging psle science questions 2

At Glow Science, we’ve developed a structured, four-step system called the Glow Science 4D Framework™ — the core architecture that shapes how every lesson is designed, taught, and connected across levels.

It provides a clear, practical process that guides students through each stage of learning, so they’re never left thinking, “I know the answer… but how do I write it?”

Here’s how each phase works to help your child excel in the PSLE Science exam:

Phase 1 Discovery: Understanding of the topic made clear

a student writing notes in a notebook

Every strong answer begins with a clear understanding. That’s why our journey starts with Glow Science Discovery Notes, carefully curated learning guides that are colourful notes that break down each topic into digestible parts.

These notes are:

  • Written in a way that is structured to boost memory
  • Fully aligned with the MOE syllabus
  • Designed to highlight key science concepts
  • Tips that will definitely be out in the exam.

For example, in a topic like water cycle, students will clearly see how water vapour loses heat to the cooler surface to form water droplets during condensation.

This allows them to recall and apply that knowledge when answering questions like:

“Explain how water droplets formed on the outside of a cold glass of water.”

A student who has used the GLOW SCIENCE Discovery Notes will be able to identify the heat source, recognise condensation, and write a precise, keyword-rich answer.

Phase 2 Explore: From concept to real-life understanding

a child looking at a microscope

Many students memorise science facts without understanding how they apply to real situations. That’s where our Explorephase comes in.

Glow Science is one of the few centres in Singapore that uses concept-based experimental learning. Every key topic includes hands-on experiments that connect theory with reality.

Why is this so powerful?

Because when your child has seen condensation happening on a glass, or tested how air resistance affects falling objects, they don’t just know the facts — they understand the subject matter!

Science Experiment- Investigating Air Resistance

This deeper understanding improves your child’s ability to analyse the question and apply the right scientific concepts and terminology.

Take a question like:

“Explain why a parachute slows down a falling object.”

A student who has conducted that experiment won’t guess. They’ll recall that air resistance increases surface area and slows down the fall, thus earning full marks.

Phase 3 Express: Teaching your child how to answer with confidence

a girl happily raising her arms up

This is where the answering framework takes centre stage.

At Glow Science, our Express phase equips students with:

  • KeyWords Journal that summarises critical keywords for each topic
  • Proven strategies to tackle open-ended questions
  • Marking rubrics so students understand how their answers are scored

Let’s say a question asks:

“Describe the process that causes water to form on a bathroom mirror after a hot shower.”

Instead of writing “The mirror becomes wet,” a Glow-trained student will say:

“Warm Water vapour in the air loses heat to the cooler mirror and condenses, forming water droplets.”

They will know to use accurate terms, explain the process clearly, and show a deep understanding of the scientific concepts involved.

That’s the difference between a vague answer and one that directly addresses the scientific concept in the question.

Phase 4 Navigate: Step-by-step practice to prepare for the PSLE

a female teacher patiently navigating the students through the lesson

Understanding and answering are only part of the equation. Your child also needs to practise under exam conditions.

At Glow Science, our Navigate phase incorporates a Tiered Assessment System that functions to build confidence and readiness for exams in a measured way:

  • Beginner: Strengthen science knowledge related to the topic and core ideas
  • Scholar: Apply knowledge to structured questions using G.L.O.W science techniques
  • Expert: Explore higher-level questions that have more sections to the questions, a,b,c, and even questions from the PSLE paper.

On top of that, we teach all our students to apply the G.L.O.W technique throughout each tier in preparation for open-ended questions. We want your child to be confident, not just during revision, but also when sitting for the paper itself.

Ultimately, this step-by-step approach helps them move from basic recall to confident, independent answering. It also trains them to manage time, read carefully, and plan their responses — all crucial for success in the PSLE.

So when your child sees a tough question on the PSLE Science paper, they won’t panic. They’ll know how to use the G.L.O.W steps naturally!

How students using the G.L.O.W method stand out in PSLE Science

Let’s take a real-world transformation.

Before G.L.O.W:

“It has magnets.”

After G.L.O.W:

“The object is attracted to the magnet because it is made of a magnetic material, which is affected by magnetism.”

See the difference?

This is the perfect example that, with the right strategy, your child’s answers will become clear, focused, and full of scoring potential.

Whether it's energy conversion, air resistance, or water vapour turning into water droplets, our G.L.O.W framework teaches your child how to apply the scientific concepts properly.

The world has changed, so should your child's strategies

a classroom of happy kids learning

The biggest mistake many students make in the PSLE Science exam is thinking that knowing content is enough.

But in open-ended questions, it’s not just about what your child knows — it’s about how they explain it.

And that's where Glow Science comes in! Our G.L.O.W framework gives students the tools to analyse the question, organise their thoughts, and write structured, precise answers using the right terms.

With the Glow Science 4D Framework™, your child has the structure, practice, and support needed to help your child succeed in the most challenging part of the paper.

And the best part? These are not last-minute hacks! They’re long-term thinking habits that develop a deep understanding of the subject matter, build confidence, and reduce exam stress.

Pauline Ho

Teacher Chloe has been my son’s science tutor since P4 to P6 and I’ve seen my son’s interest grown and the improvements in understanding concepts and applications after attending her classes. One of the very few teachers who is truly passionate in educating our young and fulfilling her duty to ensure the kids get the ‘right’ teaching. I recalled Teacher Chloe did time extension upon her return from maternity leave as she found the kids’ understanding gaps in some topics taught during her absence. In one instance my son was not behaving normally in class, she took notice straight away and called me to watch him as well. This gesture was greatly appreciated and I was very comforted to have found a good teacher for my son. In most recent months, Teacher Chloe out of her own accord and at no cost to us, arranged for extra time over a few lessons, just to ensure the kids get to do more mind mapping and push for the last lap before PSLE 2024. As a parent I am truly grateful for Teacher Chloe’s dedication and commitment as an educator, regardless the result may be. Thank you Chloe, I wish you all the best. Stay healthy, Stay Happy 😊
